How to build a tripod
- 1Pick three sound spars — straight and sized to the job.
- 2Lay them parallel, butt ends even — this makes the legs even when spread.
- 3Tie a clove hitch on an outside pole near the tips to start.
- 4Wrap 6–8 turns around all three, neat and snug (more/tighter = stiffer legs).
- 5Frap twice on each side of the center pole, then clove-hitch to an outside pole to finish.
- 6Spread the legs — cross the outer poles under the middle so it stands.
- 7Use racking turns for heavy loads, and test stability before loading.
When to use it
- Camp gadgets — washstand, table base, pot hanger, hand-washing station.
- Larger builds — two tripods carry a crossbar or support a platform.
- The fastest self-standing structure to teach and build in the field.
Common mistakes & safety
- Match the lashing to the load. For anything holding real weight, use racking turns and test it; plain turns are for light camp gadgets.
- Spread and footing. A wider leg spread is more stable; set the feet on firm ground and check the tripod doesn't rock before loading.
- Sound spars, tight lashing. A rotten pole or a loose lashing turns a stable tripod into a collapse — inspect and pull the wraps and fraps tight.
- Don't over-build on a tripod. Tripods are for gadgets and light supports; heavy or tall structures need proper engineering and anchors.
- Mind hands and heads — poles are heavy and can pinch or fall while lashing; work as a team and control the spars.
Going deeper
- Butt ends even = even legs. The small setup step that makes the finished tripod sit level — line the pole bottoms up before you lash.
- Plain turns for gadgets, racking turns for loads. The one decision that scales a tripod from a washstand to a real support — racking (figure-eight) turns weave between the spars for more grip.
- Spread wider for stability. More leg spread lowers the center of gravity and steadies the tripod — just keep the feet on firm ground.
