How to work with one
- 1Get the name and a blue card — your unit leader gives you an approved counselor's name and a signed blue card.
- 2Contact the counselor yourself and arrange to meet.
- 3Bring a buddy to every meeting — never meet one-on-one.
- 4Learn and work the requirements exactly as written.
- 5Demonstrate each requirement to the counselor.
- 6Get the sign-off — the counselor signs the blue card when you've met the requirements.
What a counselor is
- Registered and approved — a Youth-Protection-trained adult Scouter, approved by the council advancement committee for each specific badge they counsel.
- Mentor and approver — they help you learn the subject and confirm you met the requirements.
- Individual sign-off — counselors may work with groups, but each scout is credited only for what they personally complete.
Youth protection & rules
- No one-on-one contact — ever. Not in person, online, by phone, or by text; a buddy must be present at every meeting, and two-deep leadership applies to classes and outings. A counselor asking to meet a scout alone is a red flag — decline and tell a leader.
- Counselors must be registered, YPT-trained, and council-approved for the badge — not just any knowledgeable adult may sign off.
- Requirements are fixed — a counselor may not add extra hurdles or waive real ones.
- Restricted-activity badges (aquatics, climbing, shooting sports) need properly certified supervision — those safety standards apply during the badge work.
Going deeper
- Mentor and referee. The counselor both teaches you the subject and confirms you met the requirements — a rare combination that makes the relationship a real mentorship.
- The buddy rule follows you indoors. No one-on-one — ever — whether in a kitchen, a shop, or a video call.
- You make the call. Scouts, not parents or leaders, are expected to contact the counselor and set things up — small practice for adult life.
