How to rig one
- 1Decide the advantage you need — heavier load means more parts of line (higher mechanical advantage).
- 2Set the fixed block on a solid anchor and the movable block on the load.
- 3Reeve the rope between the blocks — each pass adds a part of line and more advantage.
- 4Count the parts of line on the movable block to know your advantage (2, 3, 4:1…).
- 5Pull — expect to move a lot of rope for a little load movement (the trade-off).
- 6In pioneering, use a rope tackle (trucker's hitch) to tension lines when you don't have blocks.
- 7Check the whole system's rating — rope, blocks, and anchors must all handle the multiplied force.
The physics, briefly
- Mechanical advantage ≈ the number of rope parts supporting the movable block — 4 parts ≈ 4:1 (ideal; friction reduces it).
- The trade-off: a 4:1 system needs ~1/4 the pull force, but you must pull ~4× the rope length.
- Fixed vs. movable: a fixed pulley only changes direction (no advantage); you get advantage only when a pulley moves with the load.
Common mistakes & safety
- Mechanical advantage multiplies force on the ANCHORS too. A 4:1 system puts up to 4× the load on the anchor and rope — they must be rated for the multiplied force, not just your pull.
- Rated gear only — use blocks and rope rated for the load; a cheap or damaged pulley or rope can fail under the amplified force.
- Keep hands, hair, and clothing clear — pulleys and moving rope under tension can crush fingers and grab loose items.
- Mind stored energy — a loaded tackle holds a lot of energy; if something slips it recoils dangerously, so stand clear of the line of pull.
- Don't over-lift. Advantage makes it possible to move a big load, but the structure and anchor still have a real limit.
Going deeper
- Parts of line = your advantage. Count the rope segments pulling on the moving block — that's roughly your mechanical advantage.
- You trade force for rope. Every bit of force you save, you pay back in rope pulled — a 4:1 lift means hauling four times the length.
- A fixed pulley just turns the corner. Redirecting a rope over a fixed pulley is convenient but gives zero advantage — you need a pulley on the load for that.
