Sheet Bend

The right knot for joining two ropes — and, unlike the square knot, it holds even when the two ropes are different sizes or materials. Stronger for this job, and it won't jam.

How to tie it

  1. 1Make a bight (a U-shape) in the end of the thicker rope and hold it.
  2. 2Pass the running end of the other, thinner rope up through the bight, then around and behind it.
  3. 3Bring the end across the front of the bight and tuck it under its own standing part, so that both ends come out on the same side.
  4. 4Tighten by holding the bight and pulling the standing part of the thinner line.

Double sheet bend: before tucking, take the thinner rope around the bight a second time, then tuck. Use it for slippery rope or a big difference in thickness.

When to use it

  • Joining two ropes into a longer line. The everyday reason to reach for it.
  • Joining ropes of different thickness or material, where a square knot would be unsafe.
  • Extending a guy line, clothesline, or utility line around camp.
  • Attaching a line to a ready-made loop or becket — its original job, bending a sheet to a sail.

Common mistakes & safety

  • Get the ends on the same side. If the two tails finish on opposite sides you've tied the weaker "left-handed" sheet bend — check and re-tie.
  • Thicker rope makes the bight, thinner rope is the working line. Reversed, it's less secure.
  • It can loosen when it isn't under load. For a line that will go slack and get shaken, use the double sheet bend or add a backup.
  • Don't join two ropes with a square knot to save time. That's the classic dangerous substitution the sheet bend exists to prevent.

Going deeper

  • "Bend" means join. In knot terms a bend ties two ropes together, a hitch ties a rope to an object, and a loop forms a fixed eye. The sheet bend is the archetypal bend.
  • Nautical origin. It comes from bending (attaching) a rope called a "sheet" to the corner of a sail via its becket — which is why it's naturally suited to tying a rope to a fixed loop.
  • Same geometry as a bowline. A sheet bend and a bowline are structurally the same knot — one joins two ropes, the other forms a loop — so learning one helps you tie the other.
